Shams Charania of The Athletic reported late Wednesday night that the Jazz and Knicks have engaged in trade talks for Donovan Mitchell, and a "deal framework" had recently been discussed.
But SNY's Ian Begley reports that the two sides are not close to a deal, and one of the main returns that could have gone to Utah in exchange for Mitchell is no longer an option, at least not right now.
Per Begley, Mitchell Robinson was the centerpiece in an earlier trade talk between the two teams, but since then, the Knicks have re-signed the center to a multi-year deal, ending the franchise's drought of draft picks not signed to extensions since Charlie Ward. But because of that, Robinson now cannot be traded until mid-December, and was a player the Jazz thought highly of.
As Charania also reported, Utah also likes Knicks sophomore sharpshooter Quentin Grimes, but New York initially felt the Jazz were asking for too much in earlier talks.
The Jazz are reportedly also seeking draft capital in any deal as they prepare for a full rebuild, and the Knicks can offer up to eight first-round picks in a deal for Mitchell.
