Good news for the Mets on two of their injured hurlers.
Manager Buck Showalter said prior to Tuesday’s game against Chicago that Max Scherzer will either throe a simulated game or start for Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, and the team will discuss if righty Tylor Megill is ready to rejoin the Mets after he pitches his scheduled inning for Syracuse on Tuesday night.
Scherzer, who went on the IL retroactive to Sept. 4 with left side fatigue, threw a bullpen session Sunday, and hasn’t had any hiccups with his left side over the last 10 days. The Mets are still hopeful that if he comes through Wednesday okay, he can return as soon as eligible on Sept. 19, but they haven’t decided where his rehab outing will be just yet.
“We haven’t committed completely, but there’s a possibility he could do it in Syracuse tomorrow,” Showalter said. “That’s the hope (that he could return on Sept. 19).”
Megill has been on the IL since mid-June with a right shoulder strain, but he has been a weapon out of the bullpen during his rehab assignment, pitching four perfect innings with eight strikeouts over four appearances between Double-A and Triple-A.
