Buck Showalter was asked if Nolan Arenado was out of line by sparking a benches-clearing incident between the Mets and the Cardinals on Wednesday, and the manager seemed to throw some shade at the St. Louis dugout.
“I’ll let them handle their players,” Showalter said. “I know our player got hit in the head and went to first base.”

Showalter was referring to Pete Alonso, who was hit in the head on Tuesday night, the 18th time a Mets player has been hit by a pitch this season, and immediately got up and went to first. Starling Marte was hit later in the game, and the team expressed frustration after the game.
So, when J.D. Davis was hit in the top of the eighth inning and had to leave the game after taking a ball off the ankle, Yoan Lopez’s first pitch in the bottom half of the inning was high and tight on Arenado, who challenged Lopez before benches and bullpens emptied.
Arenado was ejected.
