The Mets have added another member to their kiddie corps, promoting outfielder Nick Morabito from Triple-A Syracuse and inserting him into Tuesday’s lineup in left field.
To make room for Morabito on the 26-man roster, the Mets are designating veteran outfielder Austin Slater for assignment. He was already on the 40-man roster.
Morabito, the No. 11 prospect in the organization, joins former top prospects already on the roster including Carson Benge, who made the Opening Day roster, and A.J. Ewing, who was called up last week, as well as RHP Nolan McLean, who made his MLB debut late last season.
That list will also soon include left-hander Zach Thornton, the No. 13 prospect who will be called up Wednesday to pitch in place of injured Clay Holmes this turn through the rotation.
Morabito, 23, is a speed-and-defense specialist – MLB Pipeline grades his speed at 70 out of 80 - who slashed .253/.364/.390 with six doubles, four home runs, xx RBI, and 14 stolen bases in 41 games at Triple-A Syracuse. He also appeared in three games for Team Italy in the World Baseball Classic, going 0-for-1 at the plate.
The 2022 draftee – he was selected 75th overall, the comp pick the Mets got for the Angels signing Noah Syndergaard – will make his MLB debut in his hometown, as he was born in Northern Virginia and went to Gonzaga College HS in D.C.
And, despite the Mets having Ewing and Benge in the outfield with Juan Soto, Tyrone Taylor, and MJ Melendez, manager Carlos Mendoza told Sal Licata that Morabito is ‘going to get an opportunity’ because ‘we like the athleticism and speed, and we're just going to continue to play that type of game."
Slater, 33, was 5-for-20 in nine games with the Mets, who were his third team of 2026; he spent camp with the Tigers on a minor-league deal before being released and signing with the Marlins, where he was 4-for-23 in 12 games before being DFA and released in late-April.
