In what has become a theme of the Mets season, just when you think it can't get any worse, it does.

New York was demolished in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader, and then kicked the ball all over the infield in a 10-5 loss to the Cubs, committing six errors in a horrific showing that left Carlos Mendoza searching for answers once again.

"Embarrassing, overall," Mendoza said. "That last game, unacceptable. Everybody's pissed, everybody's frustrated."

The six errors were the most the Mets have committed in a game since equaling that total in September of 2016. Francisco Lindor, in his first game back from injury, booted a ground ball in the first. Marcus Semien misplayed a routine ground ball three innings later, then dropped a pop fly in the seventh. Bo Bichette mishandled a grounder at third, Mark Vientos threw the ball away after making a nice stop at first, then booted a grounder of his own in the ninth.

All told, the Mets lost for the fifth straight time to fall to 12 games under .500, and have allowed 50 runs during this five-game skid. They have lost seven of their last nine games, and even with Lindor back, the season seems to be at rock bottom with little hope of turning things around.

To make matters worse, there were loud "Pete Alonso" chants at Citi Field late in Wednesday's loss, as fans have clearly grown frustrated with this current team and the front office's offseason decisions that led to this current product.
