If the Mets do indeed negotiate a new deal with Carlos Correa, would that be it for New York’s offseason?

After New York agreed to a $315 million deal with Correa, and before the deal fell into limbo due to concerns over Correa’s medicals, Mets owner Steve Cohen told the New York Post, “We needed one more thing, and this is it.”

But is it?

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the finalizing of a new deal with Correa likely wouldn’t be the endgame for the Mets, who could look to move Eduardo Escobar with Correa taking over third base duties.

“I would assume this week we see some resolution and then we see the Mets spring into further action,” Rosenthal said on the latest episode of The Athletic Baseball Show. “They’re going to need to make some more trades.”

“They’ve already traded [James] McCann, I believe they would trade [Eduardo] Escobar if they signed Correa and got that deal finally done. You may see some other things to lower their payroll, not that they’ve shown much concern for lowering their payroll throughout this offseason, but they would do some things along those lines.”

Escobar, who signed a two-year, $20 million deal with the Mets last offseason, would seem expendable if Correa’s deal is finalized. He hit .240 with 20 home runs in 2022, and would likely garner trade interest. According to the Miami Herald, he already has, as the Marlins have reportedly inquired about Escobar’s availability.
