The Mets relieved their hitting coaches of their duties following their loss to the Cardinals in St. Louis on Monday night.

Veteran coaches Chili Davis, a former MLB slugger himself, and Tom Slater were dismissed after the 6-5 loss to the Redbirds at Busch Stadium.

New coaches Hugh Quattlebaum and Kevin Howard were set to be in uniform on Tuesday night when the Mets continued their series against the Cardinals, according to a team press release.

The move comes as the Mets struggle to find an offensive identity in the young season.

The lineup has been unremarkable early on, posting a 96 in Fangraphs' weighted runs created (wRC+), good for 17th in the league. Collectively, the team was hitting just .240/.324/.364 through Monday's action.

Specifically, star shortstop Francisco Lindor has been in a major slump so far early in his Mets career, slashing an anemic .163/.284/.209 after going 0-for-4 with a walk on Monday. Lindor has been dropped down to the second spot in the order in an apparent bid to shake things up. He was replaced by Jeff McNeil, who is hitting .235/.342/.368 after picking up a hit and two walks on Monday.

Meanwhile, Michael Conforto seems to have shaken off a sluggish start, but Dom Smith's average and OBP both sit under .250 after going hitless Monday.

Davis, 61, carved out a long career as a dangerous switch-hitter, and later transitioned into coaching upon retiring. He spent time as a hitting coach with the Dodgers, Cubs and Red Sox before joining the Mets in May 2018.

Slater, 53, transitioned to coaching in the pro ranks about a decade ago after a long career in college baseball. He previously spent time with the Yankees before the Mets hired him in 2017.

Monday's loss dropped the Mets to 11-12, with a -13 run differential, and tied for second place in the NL East with the Phillies.

The late-night sacking harkened back to the dismissal of former manager Willie Randolph, who was handed his pink slip after a night game against the Angels in Los Angeles, when most fans and media were sound asleep back on the East Coast.
