Mets option Dominic Smith to Triple-A

Dominic Smith's time with the Mets is on pause, as the team announced Tuesday they have optioned Smith to Triple-A Syracuse.

RHP Adonis Medina has been recalled to take Smith's roster spot.

Smith has struggled all season at the plate, his high water mark a .250 average after going 4-for-4 on May 1, which raised his average from .167 to .250 in one fell swoop. However, he was down to a .186/.287/.256 slash line as of Monday, and is just 6-for-46 (.130) since that four-hit game.

He was not in Monday's lineup vs. Washington after going 0-for-7 in his previous three games.

Smith was a stud for the Mets in limited action in 2019 and in the shortened 2020 season, but he hit just .244 with 11 homers in 145 games this year and had yet to homer in 39 games this season while splitting time between left field, first base, and designated hitter.

For now, the emergence of Luis Guillorme – who is 7-for-12 with six runs scored while starting the last three games at second – and Nick Plummer (4-for-8 in his two games starting in left field), have helped the Mets withstand the nagging injuries to Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo, and they still have not had to deploy J.D. Davis at all since he served as the DH on Friday.

Smith is the only player to man first base other than Pete Alonso this year, but Davis (15 games in 2017-18) or Canha, who played mostly first base as a rookie in 2015 and has 115 games experience there, can spell Alonso, as can Patrick Mazeika or Eduardo Escobar (18 games at first in 2021) in a pinch.

Medina, 25, has thrown 7 2/3 innings over four MLB appearances this season, posting a 5.87 ERA.
