The Mets season has seemingly hit rock bottom before the end of April, as New York coughed up a late lead and fell to the Twins for their 12th straight loss, matching the team’s longest losing streak in 24 years.
Devin Williams produced another clunker by allowing two runs in the ninth inning without recording an out, and with a Royals walk-off win later on Tuesday night, the Mets held sole possession of the worst record in Major League Baseball.
To make matters worse, the Twins danced on New York’s grave following the win with a social media post that went viral as the team’s X account posted the final score along with the caption, “Things you can get in a dozen: eggs, roses, Mets losses.”
The social media post quickly made its rounds, only magnifying the Mets’ painful slide, which has now reached a level that no team has ever overcome to make the playoffs. New York will get a massive reinforcement in Juan Soto as he returns from the IL on Wednesday, but he will have to make an instant and profound impact for the Mets to salvage their season before it can truly begin.
The 12-game skid is the sixth-longest in franchise history, and in none of those seasons did the Mets finish with a winning record. Simply put, if New York wants to avoid a second straight season ending in disaster, it will have to make baseball history.
