NHL Twitter ripping Lou Lamoriello for firing Barry Trotz: 'Laughable and despicable'

Lou Lamoriello has made some surprising moves in the past.

In 2000, then with New Jersey, he fired Robbie Ftorek as Devils head coach in favor of Larry Robinson with eight games left in the regular season, and later with New Jersey, canned Claude Julien when the Devils were second in the Eastern Conference with less than a week to go in the season, taking coaching duties over himelf.

But Monday’s decision to fire Barry Trotz as Islanders head coach was one that left NHL Twitter in disbelief.

Sure, the Islanders missed the playoffs after coming into the season with Stanley Cup aspirations, but given everything the team endured this season with their grueling road trip to begin the season and the devastating COVID outbreak, many assumed Trotz would be viewed more for his two straight trips to the Eastern Conference Final. Instead, he is gone, prompting fans to rip Lamoriello on social media:
