Joe Musgrove clearly took exception to being checked by the umpiring crew for foreign substances during his dominant carving of the Mets, as he gave plenty of stares to the Mets dugout and let out a few primal roars after the thorough check was completed.

San Diego manager Bob Melvin took exception as well, making it known that he didn’t care for the move by Buck Showalter.

“I tend to be a high-road guy, and I’m going to,” Melvin said. “But the problem I have, Joe Musgrove is a man of character. Questioning his character, that's the part I have a problem with…the reception he got after that was not warranted. I just want everyone to know that Joe Musgrove is a high-character individual.”

Added Musgrove: “I’ve seen him do it before…I get it, dude. They’re on their last legs, they’re desperate.

“It motivated me a little bit, man. It fired me up…an opportunity to stick it to them and stick it to the crowd.”

Juan Soto also added, “It is what it is. They gotta find a way to get him out of rhythm, but they can’t.”
