Pete Alonso on Mets' All-Star contingent: 'We should have that many guys'

The Mets didn’t get an All-Star starter – but on Sunday, they found out both of their starting vote finalists were indeed All-Stars, and two others made it, too.

Both Pete Alonso and Starling Marte were voted in by the players to play in the 2022 MLB All-Star Game on July 19 in Los Angeles, as revealed Sunday, and the players also voted in closer Edwin Diaz and infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil as well.

All four are second-time All-Stars, and four is the most the Mets have had since Yoenis Cespedes, Bartolo Colon, Jeurys Familia, and Noah Syndergaard all ended up as All-Stars in 2016 – and they haven’t had four or more actually play in a game since 2007.

“It’s special, and we should have that many All-Stars – we have one of the best records in baseball and our team is super-talented,” Alonso said Sunday. “We have an excellent team.”

Especially great news for Alonso, who had urged fans to vote for him in an appearance on Carton & Roberts last week, but gets to LA anyway despite losing that starting vote to Paul Goldschmidt.

“It’s such a high honor, and I’m appreciative of the opportunity. It’s hard work paying off, and I’m really happy I get to represent my team and the city of New York in Los Angeles,” he said.

And he may not have won the vote, but perhaps, the players voting him in is even more special.

“It means a lot. It’s something that I really take pride in,” Alonso said. “I’m really happy that I was able to play my way into the game. Hard work pays off.”

So, what about the Home Run Derby? Alonso told Craig & Evan he would definitely defend his title if he was voted in, then said he’d do it if “I’m an All-Star” – so what will it be?

“I never said I was gonna do the derby yet, but I’m excited for the All-Star Game,” he coyly said. “I’m really stoked.”
