The Rangers, just three points behind Carolina for the Metropolitan Division lead after Thursday night’s beatdown of the Capitals, could be looking to make a big splash before the trade deadline.
According to The Athletic’s Arthur Staple, New York has “inquired” about Predators forward Filip Forsberg, after it was reported earlier this week that Nashville was shopping the high-scoring superstar.

Of course, such a trade would command a large return, even for a rental like Forsberg, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. Per Staple, the Predators would prefer to keep Fprsberg and sign him to a new deal, and the team could just be keeping a backup option open if the two sides can’t agree to a contract by next month’s trade deadline.
Forsberg, 27, would bring more star power to a Rangers team looking to cement itself as a true Stanley Cup contender this season. He has 26 goals and 44 points in 39 games this season, and has netted at least 20 goals in seven of his last eight NHL seasons.
