The Rangers picked up another win in their quest to claim the Metropolitan Division crown, but they may have lost another player to injury in the process.
Early in the first period of what turned into a dominant 4-0 win over the Red Wings at Madison Square Garden, Kaapo Kakko suffered an injury after falling awkwardly to the ice. Kakko, who missed over two months with a wrist injury before returning just four games ago, went to the locker room and did not return.
New York could have been being cautious with Kakko given his recent injury troubles, and the fact that New York was handling Detroit at home. But after losing trade deadline acquisition Tyler Motte for the rest of the regular season, at the very least, to an upper body injury, the Rangers can't afford to suffer more blows to their depth as the playoffs approach.
On the brighter side, the win tied New York atop the division with the Hurricanes, who are in action Saturday night against the Avalanche.
