The Minnesota Timberwolves drafted University of Minnesota center Daniel Oturu with the third pick of the second round (No. 33 overall) in the 2020 NBA Draft, but the pick is reportedly being dealt to the New York Knicks.
Oturu would be the Knicks’ third addition of the night, following Obi Toppin at No. 8 and Immanuel Quickley at No. 25, the other pick acquired from Minnesota for No. 23 overall selection Leandro Bolmaro.
However, according to NBA insider Brian Windhorst, the Knicks will deal Oturu to the Clippers in exchange for a 2023 second-round pick - and the New York Post's Marc Berman later revealed the reason:
A two-year starter at Minnesota, Oturu blossomed as a sophomore, averaging 20.1 points, 11.3 boards, and 2.5 blocks for the Gophers. He also shot a Big Ten-best 56.3 percent from the field (including 36.5 percent from deep) and was named to both the All-Big Ten Second Team and Big Ten All-Defensive Team.
Oturu is Nigerian but was born in Brooklyn and raised in the Twin Cities; his father, Francis, played for the Nigerian national table tennis team, and moved to the United States due to that honor.
Ping-pong...ironically appropriate given the nature of this pick, being dealt twice in the span of an hour.
