Sal spent much of Thursday’s show expressing his confidence in the Mets power structure of Steve Cohen, David Stearns, and Billy Eppler, declaring he has more confidence in that group than any other front office group in New York sports.
Just hours later, Eppler had resigned, and hours after that, multiple reports said that the GM was being investigated by Major League Baseball for improper use of the injured list.
So, one day later, Sal doesn’t have the same confidence in the Mets hierarchy.
“This is on brand, sadly, for the Mets. I was defending them yesterday. I don’t even know if this is necessarily their fault, but come on. This is unnecessary, more mess for the Mets…It’s hard for me to believe in them the way I did 24 hours ago, because I believed in Eppler, who had the belief of his owner…with Cohen, Stearns, and Eppler, you had a nice three-headed monster. Now you’re starting over from scratch.
“I still believe in the owner…but I don’t have the same confidence in them as I did yesterday.”
Now, as another GM leaves without warning, Sal says it’s time for Cohen and Stearns to gut the rest of the front office.
“It never ends! It was supposed to be over with this owner, and then even after the initial mishaps, it continues to happen!” Sal said. “Zack Scott, Porter, now Eppler, why? This has to be the end of this bullcrap…this has to be the end of this! It never ends with this team!
“I would absolutely clean house. I mean everybody. The only way to 1,000 percent shore up that this same stuff doesn’t continue to happen, which is a carryover from prior ownership…is to totally clean out and bring in your own people. Otherwise, how can we say this won’t happen again? It happens all the time.”
