Mike Trout is likely to miss nearly two months after suffering a hamate bone fracture in his hand, the same injury Andrew Benintendi suffered with the Yankees last year, which ended his season.
The Angels, losers of seven out of 10, have injuries all over the diamond right now, and could fall out of the playoff race yet again.
Does that mean Shohei Ohtani could wind up on the trading block? If he does, Sal says it would be the worst idea for the Mets to try and make a deadline splash.
“The dumbest thing that you could possibly do if you’re the Mets at this point,” Sal said of trading for the two-way superstar. “Period. It’s the dumbest thing. “They’re not that good this year, and you can just sign him for whatever you want in the offseason and keep all your prospects.
“They don’t have enough of what it would take to get him…it’s just a non-starter because it’s not realistic.”
Sal doesn’t want to sacrifice the farm system that is already in need of replenishing when the Mets could cut the biggest paycheck in free agency, and potentially get Ohtani for nothing but money.
“If he doesn’t want to take the most money, the Mets don’t have a chance,” Sal said. “Their biggest bargaining chip is the most money.”
Jerry doesn’t agree, and says if the Ohtani is put on the block this summer, the Mets have to try and put a package together, perhaps leaving only Francisco Alvarez as untouchable.
“Ohtani, to me, for the next five or six years, you’re getting a proven two players, as opposed to the prospects,” Jerry said. “[The Mets] do have names and people that I think teams would be interested in.”
