Sal is convinced Bryce Elder hit Pete Alonso in the back on purpose during Tuesday night's game, but his anger was much more focused on the Braves fans who cheered Alonso for getting plunked, and on the Mets for once again not retaliating.
"Those losers in Atlanta and that loser fanbase that doesn't deserve a team as good as the Atlanta Braves," Sal said. "Those loser, pathetic Braves fans are cheering it…and the Mets do something about it?
"Dude, somebody show some guts and drill somebody, you soft bunch of babies! Hit somebody! I would have hit the next three guys in a row if I was pitching. There are certain guys who can't get hit. Pete wears it, and he got drilled. Do something about it."
Alonso was hit by Charlie Morton the last time the Mets were in Atlanta, and it cost him multiple games due to a wrist injury, and a prolonged slump immediately followed as the Mets fell out of the Wild Card race and eventually sold at the trade deadline. Sal believes things could have gone a little differently if the 2023 Mets stood up for their own in moments like Tuesday night, much like they did last year during a brawl with the Cardinals.
"They didn't have that galvanizing moment this year," Sal said. "Maybe they could have used it."
