Scott Boras was his typical self at the GM Meetings on Wednesday, breaking out a full arsenal of colorful quotes and metaphors to describe his long list of high-profile clients, and Pete Alonso was no exception.
The MLB super-agent told reporters that he had a lengthy discussion with Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns on Tuesday, and made it known that his line is open to talk about an extension for the slugging first baseman.
“I met yesterday at length with David, and we had a long conversation about his philosophies and ideology,” Boras said. “He certainly views Pete as a core part of their team.
“We just kind of let him know that when it comes to the Polar Bear, we're not in contract hibernation.”
Alonso’s future with the Mets is uncertain after reports over the summer indicated that New York at least mulled the possibility of trading their homegrown star at the deadline, and if the arrival of Stearns means a change in philosophy where Alonso isn’t seen as worthwhile long-term investment. Stearns told reporters at his introductory press conference that he sees Alonso as the team’s Opening Day first baseman in 2024, but he is a free agent at the end of next season, and he will command a big payday as one of the best power hitters in all of baseball.
But Boras told reporters on Tuesday that there are other aspects of Alonso’s game that will make him so coveted in free agency, should he get there next winter.
“The thing about Pete is his durability,” Boras said. “You look at the number of players who can post and do what he does…and his commitment to defensive improvement.
“Sometimes in this industry, durability, we take it for granted. But it’s very, very hard to do for these players.”
