Sing it again, Suzyn!
As you may remember, Suzyn Waldman sang the National Anthem prior to the Yankees’ 2020 home opener, paying off a promise she made to Gerrit Cole long before he donned the pinstripes – and in true fashion of a former Broadway singer, she crushed it.
Well, Suzyn is going to crush it again Wednesday night, as the San Diego Padres’ PA team is slated to play a recording of her anthem before Game 3 of the ALDS – technically, despite being thousands of miles away, the Yankees’ first “home” game of the 2020 postseason.
“Tampa Bay was the home team for the first two games and had all their theatrics, and now it’s the Yankees’ turn,” Suzyn told Moose & Maggie on Wednesday, “so tonight, they’re having Paul O’Neill doing a virtual first pitch, and they’re using the recording of my anthem, like it’s a Yankees home game. That’s kind of cool, so I just texted someone out there and said don’t mess with my recording!”
A great moment to be shared again, even if Suzyn was self-deprecating about the circumstances of the original.
“When Cole signed, and Sweeny and I had him on at the press conference, he said, ‘you remember your promise to me, right?’” Suzyn laughed. “It worked out on Opening Day this year because there was no one else allowed in the ballpark!”
Be sure to listen to Game 3 of the ALDS tonight on WFAN, with coverage beginning at 6:25 with John Sterling & Suzyn Waldman on the Pregame Show…and you never know what you may hear around 7 - is it live, or is it Memorex?
