What is former Mets manager Terry Collins’ message to angry baseball fans that want to see Steve Cohen slow down on the spending?
“Yeah, well, too bad,” Cohen told Zach Gelb. “Hang with him. Nobody tells anybody how to spend their money, no matter what they do. Steve Cohen wants to win in the worst way and bring a championship to New York…I understand not all the owners have that kind of money, but that’s the way the game is. For years everyone was the envy of the Yankees when George [Steinbrenner] was running the Yankees and they got every good player out there.”
Some fans insist that other teams can’t “hang with” Cohen, the richest owner in all of baseball by a considerable amount. But with his wealth comes a seemingly unparalleled financial commitment to fielding a winner, most recently showcased by signing Carlos Correa to a $315 million deal after the star infielder’s medicals worried the Giants.
But Collins was hardly surprised that it was Cohen who swooped in to nab his latest big free agent prize of the offseason.
“I wasn’t shocked. Nothing surprises me anymore,” Collins said. “Anything can happen in the game, and certainly with the activity of Steve Cohen and the way he’s going about things, nothing shocks me.
“I think it’s a great move. I actually talked to Buck [Showalter] today and congratulated him on the signing, and said how much fun it was gonna be to watch this team play. I think it’s great for baseball, great for New York, and certainly great for the New York Mets.”
