Anthony Volpe is tearing it up in spring training for the Yankees, raising questions if the top prospect should actually be the team’s starting shortstop on Opening Day.
BT isn’t quite sure that Volpe will make that kind of jump after playing just a few weeks of Triple-A, but he does believe that Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s time at the position is over, and Oswald Peraza will likely be the starter when the regular season begins.
“It might not be Volpe, but it’s at least gonna be Peraza,” BT said. “IKF is not starting shortstop on Opening Day. You can take that one to the bank. Book it.”
It certainly seems to be trending in that direction, as Kiner-Falefa has been tried out at other infield spots recently, and is expected to get work in the outfield as well, after temporarily losing his starting shortstop job to Peraza briefly during the postseason. Peraza, who batted over .300 in the majors last season, started off the spring strong but now has just three hits in 17 at-bats. Still, Tiki agrees with BT that it won’t be Kiner-Falefa at shortstop on March 30.
“It just feels like the momentum around IKF is stalled and done, and let’s go start one of these young kids and see what we have here,” Tiki said.
