The Mets have won three in a row and cut their Wild Card deficit to 6.5 games, not long after staring up at a double-digit deficit in the playoff race.
Still, despite making up quick ground in recent days, Tiki says if that trend doesn't continue over the next two weeks, the Mets need to ignite the fire sale.
"Essentially, in the next five series, so 14 games, they have to make up the 6.5 game Wild Card deficit that they're sitting behind," Tiki said. "It's amazing, when you stack wins together, how much closer you get to being playoff viable…but in the next 14 games, the Mets have a Herculean task. They have to flip it by half. They have to flip themselves into the Wild Card conversation, otherwise, Steve Cohen is going to become a seller."
If the Mets don't stay hot and don't take another big bite out of their deficit in the standings, Tiki says no veteran would be safe from trade.
"Steve Cohen is not gonna throw good money after bad money," Tiki said.
"You can clearly see them moving on from guys like Tommy Pham…some team can use him. Some team can use Verlander, who has worked his ERA down below four. Scherzer…somebody will see him as valuable. Canha, he can be valuable. Marte can be valuable somewhere else."
A deficit of 6.5 games in early July is absolutely surmountable, but New York is looking up at six teams it would have to jump in order to reach the postseason. The team's next 14 games include the next two contests with the NL West leading Diamondbacks, a three-game set with the Padres, three against the Dodgers, and three against the Red Sox. If the Mets can't continue to string together wins, it will be time to unload and invest in the future.
"If the Mets can't flip this Wild Card deficit into a Wild Card conversation," Tiki said. "If they don't continue to ride this win train, this team is absolutely going to be a seller."
