The Knicks clearly have a point guard problem, but head coach Tom Thibodeau doesn't think the team currently has a better option.
With Derrick Rose still out with ankle troubles and Kemba Walker shutting things down for the rest of the season, New York has turned to Alec Burks to get out of his comfort zone and take on a regular point guard role. It hasn't worked out, as Burks is shooting 35 percent from the floor over his last 40 games, when he began seeing more time running the point. His outside shooting has been even worse of late, shooting 28 percent from downtown over his last 11 contests.
But Thibodeau doesn't seem to have any urge to switch things up after New York logged a total of 20 assists in Wednesday's loss to the 76ers, the Knicks' sixth straight defeat.
"That's the best we have, so that's what we're doing," Thibodeau said. "We're capable…I thought we played very well in the first half and didn't play well in the second half. I'm more concerned about our defense than our offense."
Many have wondered why rookie point guard Miles McBride hasn't seen more time, especially as he has been tearing it up all season in Westchester. McBride did see the floor on Wednesday, but only for a grand total of 75 seconds, well into garbage time.
McBride hit his lone shot of the night, a corner three, but it doesn't seem like he will be getting more looks, even as the Knicks rank dead last in the league in assists per game. But that's not the stat Thibodeau looks at when determining whether a change is necessary, so Knicks fans shouldn't expect a new face bringing the ball up down the stretch of what has become a lost season.
"You also have to look at free throw attempts," Thibodeau said. "We're fourth in the league in free throw attempts. That's part of it."
