The Mets have just one finalist for an NL Gold Glove this year, that being catcher Tomas Nido – leaving many to wonder exactly how Jeff McNeil and Luis Guillorme, and maybe even Francisco Lindor, were snubbed.
Guillorme definitely and McNeil likely could have been finalists at the new utility position, but the committees chose to take two finalists at other positions – St. Louis’ Tommy Edman (second base) and Arizona’s Daulton Varsho (right field) – to join the Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan.
McNeil and Guillorme may have been hurt by not having as much of a “utility” profile; McNeil had 844 innings at second, 271 in left field, and 92 in right, plus one at third base, while Guillorme had 542 innings at second, 160 at third, and 52 at short.
Edman played almost equal innings at second and short (614 2/3 to 622) and also had 26 at third and eight in the outfield corners. Varsho, meanwhile, had 541 2/3 in right field, 378 2/3 in center field, and 175 behind the plate.
Donovan was literally all over the place, playing 264 1/3 innings at second, 189 at third, 144 in left field, 143 in right field, 58 at first base, and 56 at shortstop, as well as 11 starts at DH.
Regardless of the snubs, Nido is up against J.T. Realmuto and Travis d’Arnaud behind the plate, coming off a season where he was a +8 in defensive runs saved, had a .994 fielding percentage and 21 percent caught stealing rate, and ranked in the 93rd percentile in framing.
