Aaron Judge is back with the Yankees on a nine-year, $360 million deal, but how close was he to signing elsewhere?
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, Judge flew to San Diego “at the last minute” to meet with the top three teams in the running, the Yanks, Giants, and the unexpected dark horse in the Padres. According to NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty, the Padres came in with an offer higher than the $360 million deal he signed with the Yankees, a contract offer that Judge was “mulling,” but ultimately decided to remain in pinstripes.
The draw back to the Bronx was likely helped along significantly by the Yanks reportedly upping their offer once the Padres got involved, as Passan reports that the Yanks came back with the $360 million offer, helping Judge make his decision to remain with the team that drafted him back in 2013.
According to Jack Curry of the YES Network, the Yankees offer to Judge as of Sunday was an eight-year deal for roughly $300 million, but committed to making sure their homegrown superstar was staying put, and upped the offer to make sure they didn’t lose arguably the best hitter in the game.
