When the Yankees' Opening Day roster was revealed with 14 position players and 12 pitchers, manager Aaron Boone said the team was working on a potential deal to add another pitcher before Saturday.
Shortly after they wrapped up a 5-0 win over the Giants, we found out what that move was: the Yankees have acquired RHP Colten Brewer from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations.
Brewer, 30, spent most of last year with the Royals organization, going 1-1 with one save and a 4.76 ERA in 39 2/3 innings at Triple-A Omaha before being released in August. He signed with the Rays as a minor league free agent with in December and had a strong spring - 4H, 1R/0ER, 3BB, 15K in 9 1/3 innings over eight outings - but wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster, so he used his opt out and ended up traded to New York.
Originally a fourth-round pick of the Pirates in 2011, Brewer has spent MLB time with the Padres (2018) and Red Sox (2019-21) and posted a 5.04 ERA with 88 strikeouts in 91 innings over 81 games.
This is his second stint in the Yankees organization, as they selected him in the minor-league portion of the Rule 5 Draft in 2016, and he posted a 2.82 ERA in 60 2/3 innings across three levels.
