Keith: Maybe Yankees could have signed Blake Snell if they weren't tied to other bad contracts

News of Blake Snell reportedly signing with the Giants broke while Keith was on the air on Monday night, and Keith said the road block of the reigning NL Cy Young winner not coming to New York simply came down to money.

“It’s a contract that we could have signed here,” Keith said. “They wouldn’t though, with the luxury tax.

“They have their limits…they’re hell-bent on being a champion, but not to go over the luxury tax.”

The Yankees were up against the highest luxury tax tier, and Keith said that could have been avoided had they not committed to contracts that have not aged well in recent years.

“It’s where they are. I’ve talked about the money,” Keith said. “Maybe if they weren’t stuck with the Giancarlo Stanton contract. Think about the moves they’ve made in the last few years. DJ LeMahieu is making $15 million. He’s banged up.”
