Despite all the road blocks associated with the coronavirus pandemic, the Oregon State Beavers football team was able to find some highlights in the 2020 season. They beat Oregon for the first time in four years, at home, Jermar Jefferson become the preeminent running back for the Pac-12 conference, and an anonymous donor gifted $50 million for stadium renovations.
All these positives have head coach Jonathan Smith optimistic about the program’s future.
“We were very grateful to play,” Coach told The FAN, Wednesday morning. “It was just a lot of work and a really different atmosphere.” Smith says he was proud of his players’ resolve to play at a high level during a truncated season. “I think it did show some real maturity, and showed how much football meant to them. The decisions day to day not only affected themselves, but affect this team,” he said.
That experience playing against adversity will be key heading into next season, as Oregon State brings back its entire starting offensive line, five of its top six wide receivers and its two best tight ends.
Those roster consistencies give the Beavers more experience to pass around.
“Having around seven of the (recently signed recruits) here on campus makes a big difference being able to go through spring ball and get acclimated,” Smith said.
Beaver fans are optimistic about OSU’s outlook in 2021, but many of them are looking towards 2023 when renovations to Reser Stadium’s west side will be complete. Coach Smith tells it will be a distinct advantage to players and fans. “There’s a lot to sell about that (through recruiting) and guys are very interested and intrigued to play in the best of the best,” Coach said.
“The excitement of coming to games for our fan base makes a huge difference for the experience of our players in games.”
