The Los Angeles Rams were able to pull off a blockbuster quarterback trade over the weekend. Multiple sources now confirming the Rams send Jared Goff, a 2021 third-round pick, a 2022 first-round pick and a 2023 first-round pick to the Lions in for former No. 1 overall draft pick, Matt Stafford.
It’s not often you get big quarterback trade news. It always seems like the quarterback position is one trading teams more frequently. Dirt and Sprague spoke with Matt “Money” Smith, play-by-play announcer for the Chargers and personality on 570 AM LA Sports, about the bigger implications of the Rams’ move.
“My first reaction was that I couldn’t believe they were able to unload Goff’s contract,” Smith said. The former Rams QB is due $25 million next season, the third of a four year contract. There is a potential out in 2023.
Matt was more surprise why more teams weren’t following in the Rams’ footsteps when it comes to team building.
Speaking of other NFL franchises he said, “Well, we’d love to make those moves but you know, cap, and dead money…” He’s reffering to the Rams’ ability to take on massive luxury taxes and cap hits while still paying for players like Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey. Now, they’ll have to pay out Goff’s contract.
“They can just carry all this money, and it leads me to really do a bit of a deep dive into the books of these franchises and find out if there’s borderline collusion,” Money Smith told us.
“They’ve just thrown money at their problems.” Let’s see if their cash throwing ways lead to another Super Bowl appearance.
