How will you celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day?

Even with social distancing and safer at home restrictions in place, there are still ways to honor our planet. Here are some suggestions:

1. Go outside and get some fresh air. Be sure to maintain a safe distance from others. In Madison, you can visit the UW Arboretum. Here are some guidelines for you to follow.

2. Find a digital event at the official Earth Day site.

3. Learn about environmental groundbreakers. Check out this documentary about Aldo Leopold.

4, Go on a scavenger hunt with your kids. Look for birds, four-legged critters like rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks. Look under rocks to find interesting bugs. Or play Earth Day Bingo.

5. Calculate your carbon footprint.

6. Go meat-free for a day. A vegetarian’s carbon foodprint is about two thirds of the average American and almost half that of a meat lover. (More info here).

7. Play a free online Earth Day game.

8. Hug a tree (since you can't hug other people right now). Folks in Iceland are recommending it!

9. Plan a butterfly garden.

10. Raise money for environmental causes by surfing the web, with a browser extension.
