7 songs that will transport you back to your high school ‘Spring Fling’

A totally hot homage to the mid-2000s just in time for Spring

Picture it, it's mid-April in 2005. You’re fresh off of your spring break trip with your family to Mexico. Your totally hot, beach-braided, cornrows may have had to come out, but you‘re still rockin' a mega tan. As you’re standing in front of the mirror putting the finishing touches on your low rise cargo-pant and Von Dutch crop top outfit, your mind is reeling over which pop-punk song your crush will finally ask you to dance to.

As you swipe on your favorite strawberry kiwi Lip Smakers and adjust your butterfly hair clips, your pink Razr lights up with frenzied text messages as your BFF lets you know that she’s arrived in her mom’s Honda Pilot. You’re ready to roll!

With Spring upon us and everything starting to feel in full bloom again, we’ve time-traveled back to the days of iconic pop-punk and sidekick cell phones to reimagine what a typical high school Spring Fling playlist might sound like in the early oughts. We hope you enjoy this off-the-hook playlist and don’t lose your voice screaming along to Panic! At The Disco's “I Write Sins Not Tragedies.”

7 Beverly Hills - Weezer

A now iconic song, that was an instant guarantee to get the party started. The entire music video itself was just one big party at the Beverly Hills Playboy mansion, Hugh Heffner cameo included. The 2005 Weezer record was released on March 29, making it feel like a song that fits perfectly into the idea that Spring brings about the carefree and joyous activities that come along with the sunnier months on the calendar.

6 Girlfriend - Avril Lavigne

The lead single off of Avril Lavigne’s third studio album, The Best Damn Thing embodies all the teen angst and yearning that comes along with crushing one someone who doesn’t like you back, basically the perfect song for high school dance filled with nervous energy and hormones.

5 We Belong Together - Mariah Carey

The perfect slow dance song. Your palms might be a little sweaty as you awkwardly sway with your crush in your arms, but Mariah Carey always makes everything ok. Mimi also dropped this track in the Spring of 2005, just in time to start getting the courage up to ask the class hottie on to the dance floor.

4 My Humps - Black Eyed Peas

The song that had teens of the mid-2000s awkwardly asking “Whatcha gonna do with all that junk / All that junk inside your trunk?” Fergie really served on this 2005 Black Eyed Peas song and had us all wanting “Seven jeans / True Religion.” From slow dancing to Mariah to booty shaking with the Black Eyed Peas this is the song you turned all the way up in order to heat up the mood.

3 Sugar, We're Goin' Down - Fall Out Boy

There is no such thing as a high school dance in the mid-2000s if we’re not living our full pop-punk fantasy, and of course, Fall Out Boy’s “Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” was always there to deliver. The song, which debuted in April 2005, always got the heads banging and still aims to make any good party complete. Forget the slow dancing and booty popping; all we need for a good time is a good emo moment.

2 Pon de Replay - Rihanna

This May 2005 track proved to us that Rihanna certainly knows how to have a kick-ass time and knows that the dancefloor is where it all goes down. Closing out your playlist at the spring fling with “Pon de Replay” ensures that everyone will “shake it until the moon becomes the sun.”

1 I Write Sins Not Tragedies - Panic! At the Disco

However, the only way to properly close out an evening at the high school dance in the mid-2000s is with Panic! At the Disco and Panic! At the Disco only. Moshing and bouncing to Brendon Urie as he belts out “haven’t you people ever heard of / closing the goddamn door” is the perfect way to burn off the last few spurts of energy that you’ve been thriving off of from your vodka Red Bull…. which you snuck into the dance via water bottle nestled into your Juicy Couture purse.
