The Fan’s Jeremy Conn recently sat down virtually with Dr. Richard Levin of Chesapeake Urology to discuss Rezum, a new treatment for BPH, a common prostate ailment among men ages 50 and older.
For most all men, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, commonly known as BPH, is a natural part of getting older. But while many men suffer from this ailment in silence, the fact is, as symptoms increase, BPH can lead to serious kidney, bladder and urinary issues. On top of that, BPH can interfere with a patient’s day-to-day life by disrupting sleep, damaging confidence and self-esteem, and putting a damper on sex drive.
Dr. Levin is well versed in treating BPH and Rezum therapy, with Chesapeake Urology being a Rezum Center of Excellence behind Levin’s lead.
“BPH is a very common condition that we see in urology. It starts to affect men as they get into their 50’s and 60’s, and by the time your 60 we see about 50 percent of men are starting to have these symptoms of BPH,” said Levin.
According to Levin, symptoms include –
Waking up several times a night to urinate; a weak, interrupted urine stream; difficulty starting and stopping; feeling a sudden urge to urinate; not sure your bladder is empty; dribbling at the end of your stream; painful or burning urination; inability to go when you feel the need; lack of control over urination, among others.
According to Levin, there are many options for treating BPH, but one major upside of Rezum therapy his patients are often interested in, is its impact on their health in the bedroom compared to other treatment options.
“It’s a very minimally invasive treatment that takes about five minutes to do in a doctor’s office under local anesthesia. It has a lot less sexual side effects as some of the medication and some of the more invasive surgical procedures,” said Levin.
Dr. Levin said Rezum patients typically see results in two to four weeks, with results being long term, as a recent study showed after five years less than five percent of men who received Rezum therapy required another procedure.
