For the first time in almost two months—49 days, to be precise—Red Sox farmhand Yairo Muñoz failed to log a hit Tuesday night, ending his club-record hitting streak at 35 games. The 26-year-old utility player went 0-for-4 in the WooSox’s 2-0 win over visiting Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees), snapping what had been the longest hitting streak in minor-league baseball since Iledmaro Vargas hit safely in 35 straight for Triple-A Reno in 2018.

Before Muñoz moved ahead of him, the longest hitting streak in Red Sox franchise history belonged to Dom DiMaggio, who put together a 34-game run in 1949. Muñoz hit an impressive .390 (57-for-146) with three homers and 15 RBI during the streak, raising his season average 65 points (.250 to .315) in that span. Speaking through an interpreter (teammate Jack Lopez, who recently represented the United States in the Tokyo Olympics), Muñoz didn’t seem too broken up about the streak ending, insisting he was just happy Worcester got the win.

A lifetime .278 hitter in parts of three MLB seasons including a 12-game stint for Boston last fall, Muñoz should see action with the Red Sox as a September call-up next month. His defensive versatility (he’s started at seven different positions this season) could also come in handy for the struggling Red Sox, who trail the Yankees and Athletics by a single percentage point in the American League Wild Card race.
