Three years ago Monday, the Eagles – fresh off giving Carson Wentz a four-year deal just under a year earlier – pulled off a surprise when they used a second round pick on Jalen Hurts.
This Monday, the young quarterback was hosting a press conference after signing a monster contract, a clear indication that the 2020 stunner was by no means an error.
Hurts inked a five-year, $255 million contract this offseason after his breakout 2022 campaign. The 24-year-old blossomed into a star this past season, becoming one of the most productive quarterbacks in the game while guiding Philly to the Super Bowl. It was a no-brainer for Howie Roseman to get Hurts signed long-term.
It’s been a rapid ascension for Hurts, who told the WIP Afternoon Show that he actually felt the same way after signing the deal as he did when he was drafted.
“I had the same emotions (on draft night) that I have now, just hunger,” Hurts said. “The hunger has always been there for me, and regardless of the circumstance or situation that anyone envisioned, I knew what I wanted for myself and I knew what I was willing to do to go get it.
“The same approach that I had that day three years ago today is the same approach that I have now. I just want to take advantage of the opportunity knowing that I am blessed to have this opportunity and just continue to grow as a player and lead.”
That approach has worked well for Hurts thus far, and certainly the Eagles must be thrilled that he’s maintaining that mindset even after landing the big contract.
