After “Jeopardy!” host Alex Trebek died in November from stage 4 pancreatic cancer, his son Matt Trebek decided to donate his late father’s extensive wardrobe that he wore during his 37-year run as host.
However, there is one item that Matt held onto when donating the clothes. “I kept a tie that my mom had given my dad. As far as clothing goes, that was probably the most important item,” Matt told Entertainment Tonight.
Last month, Matt and a producer for the game show donated the majority of Trebek’s show wardrobe to the Doe Fund, a New York City nonprofit that aids men who previously struggled with addiction, homelessness, and incarceration.
In all, they donated 14 suits, 58 dress shirts, 300 neckties, 25 polo shirts, 14 sweaters, nine sport coats, nine pairs of dress shoes, 15 belts, two parkas, and three pairs of slacks.
“The Doe Fund made perfect sense since these are guys who are going on job interviews and need second chances,” Trebek’s 31-year-old son said. “It would be an honor to the type of work that my Dad did throughout his life.”
Though television audiences were used to seeing Trebek in formal attire, Matt shared that when he was home, “He was very casual, dressed down a lot. He did a lot of work around the house, so most of his [clothes], it would be jeans and a T-shirt. A lot of the jeans and T-shirts had holes in them. Completely different than how he was on TV.”
The family plans on sorting through Trebek’s closet at home “but for right now, those are kind of staying put.”
