A ‘Dune’ Remake Is Coming — Where Are the Stars of the Original 1984 Cult Classic Now?

Few moves are as mythologized as “Dune.”

Directed by David Lynch, the film is based on the 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The film’s production has a storied history, starting in 1971 with a years-long development under psychedelic director Alejandro Jodorowsky that never came to fruition.

Lynch was hired to take on the project in 1981. Although it flopped at the box office, pulling in only $30.9 million against its $40 million budget, the film has developed a cult following over the years.

On Monday, Vanity Fair shared an exclusive first look of this year’s remake, slated for release on Dec. 18 of this year. The dystopian desert shots of Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya suggest the Denis Villeneuve-directed feature might be just the film we need during these strange times.

EXCLUSIVE: Timothée Chalamet is Paul Atreides.

While you patiently wait for the new “Dune,” take a look at what the stars from the original 1984 film are up to now.

Kyle MacLachlan

MacLachlan’s turn as Paul in “Dune” was the start of a long and fruitful working relationship with Lynch. The two would go on to work together in the surreal 1986 masterpiece “Blue Velvet” and bizarre TV cult hit “Twin Peaks.” MacLachlan has since enjoyed an accomplished Hollywood career, appeared in a long list of films and shows including “The Flinstones,” “Showgirls,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” and “Sex and the City.” Most recently, he starred as Thomas Edison in the 2020 biopic “Tesla.”

Everett McGill

In the film, McGill played Stiglar, the leader of Sietch Tabr, a Fremen community on the desert planet Arrakis. But McGill rose to prominence in 1981 for his portrayal as a caveman in “Quest for Fire.” He would go on to have significant roles in films like “Silver Bullet” (1985), “Heartbreak Ridge” (1986) and “Under Siege 2: Dark Territory” (1995). McGill also starred as “Big” Ed Hurley in “Twin Peaks.” Although he retired from acting in 1999, he returned to reprise his role in the 2017 reboot of the show.

Sean Young

“Dune” fans remember Young as Chani, the wife and legal concubine of Paul. But the actress has had turns in other major films including “Wall Street,” “Fatal Instinct” and “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.” And of course, “Dune” wasn’t her first time to the sci-fi rodeo — she also starred as experimental replicant Rachael in Ridley Scott’s 1982 classic “Blade Runner,” for which she reprised her role in the 2017 reboot “Blade Runner 2049.”

Patrick Stewart

Stewart was a member of the formidable “Dune” ensemble in his role as Gurney Halleck, talented minstrel skilled in the use of the baliset, a 9-stringed musical instrument. Of course, everyone knows Stewart for his prominent role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” its subsequent films, and the 2020 series “Star Trek: Picard.” He also as the iconic Professor Charles Xavier in the “X-Men” superhero film series.

Sting

Sting has been called a “scene-stealer” for his role as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the younger nephew and heir of the Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. But of course, Sting is known internationally first and foremost for his music with The Police and subsequent solo output, as well as for his extensive philanthropic efforts throughout the world.

Jürgen Prochnow

The role of Leto I Atreides, Paul’s father and Duke of House Atreides, was played German-born actor Jürgen Prochnow. Throughout his career, Prochnow is also known for his roles in “Das Boot,” “Air Force One” and “Beverly Hills Cop II.” Prochnow still continues to act in both English and German projects to this day, in addition to doing voice work for audiobooks.
