Seattle Sounders FC today rolled out one of the coolest collaborations I've seen in sports - the Jimi Hendrix Kit. Sure we've seen fun one-off XBOX themed shirts for game releases, but this takes a partnership into cool news waters - lava lamp waters.
This is a secondary kit - sort of like an away jersey in other sports - Seattle Sounders FC will still primarly wear Rave Green when they take the pitch at Lumen Field, but in special competitions or on the road, you'll see the this thing in its full glory.
This is an "intersection of sports, music, and pop culture" say the Sounders FC press release and it really feels unlike anything else they've ever done. The color scheme alone is so wildly different that this stands out. Frankly, when I saw the leak I was hesitant, but with the partnership announced today, this thing sings!
Snag one quickly, because as the Sounders FC points out the Jimi Hendrix Kit also has "purpose beyond the pitch. Sounders FC is partnering with recently announced club partner, the Puyallup Tribe’s Emerald Queen Casino to donate proceeds up to $50,000 from the first 30 days of The Jimi Hendrix Kit’s sales made at official team Pro Shop locations and on MLSstore.com to five local nonprofits: The Jimi Hendrix Park Foundation, the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM), RAVE Foundation and the Tacoma Public Schools Indian Education Program."
