Just when you thought it was safe to get your feet wet.

A Florida man dismounting his surfboard in knee-deep water over the weekend was bitten by a small shark.

The bite victim, 35, suffered minor lacerations to his foot and ankle, beach safety officials told WOFL-TV Orlando.

The man reported the shark to be around two to three feet long while he was treated at the scene for his injuries. He refused a hospital visit and left the bite site at New Smyrna Beach on his own recognizance in his own vehicle.

This was the ninth reported incident in Volusia County this year, officials said.

The International Shark Attack File shows that the region's five-year annual average is nine. The Dayton News-Journal reported the county regularly leads the United States in annual reported shark bites, but they're mostly minor and rarely life-threatening.
