Lana Del Rey just dropped her ninth studio album, Did you know that there’s a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, with a myriad of musical features and feats.

Again closely collaborating with Jack Antonoff of Bleachers, the “Video Games” singer released sixteen songs at the stroke of midnight, March 24. As if Lana and Antonoff’s names weren’t big enough, the album features four additional collaborations, including Father John Misty on “Let The Light In”, SYML on “Paris, Texas”, and Tommy Genesis on “Peppers”. Jazz pianist and singer Jon Batiste even features on two songs - “Candy Necklace” and the interlude bearing his name. Ultimately, these major collaborations accumulate in what can only be described as a soul-wandering production.
The album feels like a stream of a female poet’s consciousness, which in many ways, is precisely what it is. “I just sing exactly what I’m thinking,” Lana told Billboard. “This music is about thought processing. It’s very, very wordy. I’m definitely living from the neck up.”
In addressing her most personal worries and thoughts, the songwriter reflects her raw material through exposed instruments and musical imperfections. While this album may not be for the light-hearted, it unilaterally adds to Lana’s narrative as her own musical force.
When accepting Billboard’s Women in Music Visionary Award earlier this month, Lana admitted, “I don’t exactly have a longterm vision at all, but if you were curious, I am very, very happy.” Adding, “when I released my first album 14 years ago, the waters were not quite as warm. So I’m really happy for everyone who feels like it’s a wonderful time in the culture to be themselves… And I’m so grateful to be in the best company I’ve ever been in.”
