Readin' Writin' and Reason | Episode 89

Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards.

First, Dom welcomes in Nathan Benefield, Senior Vice President of the Commonwealth Foundation, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a new ruling by the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court which decided that the funding system for the State, particularly pertaining to Philadelphia public schools, violates the state constitution. In a press release, Benefield wrote, "The court is right to affirm that the current system of education funding is flawed—but thankfully stopped short of mandating more money to a broken system, and left it to the legislature and executive branches to find a solution." Benefield explains what exactly the decision means from a conservative perspective, how it will affect taxes moving forward, and frames how this changes the discussion on school choice.

Then, Dom welcomes Tennessee State Representative Joe Towns, who recently proposed in his State Legislature to create an official State holiday the day following the Sunday's big game, allowing both children in schools and state workers the opportunity to take off and enjoy the moment. Dom pushes back against the proposition, asking where instead we'd take the day from, with Towns suggesting that we add it to an already established list of holidays, with Dom pressing a particular amendment in the bill that suggests the removal of Christopher Columbus Day.
