
A fun day at the fair turned into a nightmare for several families when a towering carousel ride malfunctioned, causing riders to plummet 50 feet to the ground.
Sixteen people were injured, including five children.
The accident occurred in northern India Sunday night at the Dussehra Fairgrounds in the city of Mohali, according to Fox News.
The ride, a high-rise carousel that lifts passengers 50 feet off the ground and spins them around, had reached the top of the pole it rotates around when it suddenly broke free and came hurtling down to the ground.
Video of the accident shows the ride hitting the ground so hard that a number of passengers broke free of their safety harnesses and flew out of their seats.
Witnesses the Hindustan Times that fair organizers "fled the scene" immediately after the crash.
Police told The Times they're planning to "hold an inquiry, and strict action will be taken against the guilty."
The cause of the ride malfunction is not yet known at this time.
