NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The NYPD is investigating after a brawl broke out on a dance floor of a Manhattan-bound Carnival cruise ship early Tuesday morning.

The melee began after a large party on the Carnival Magic was forced to abandon their gathering on the top level of the ship due to bad weather, forcing hundreds of passengers to go to a lower deck at another club.

Ed, a passenger from Nyack, told 1010 WINS that the "rush" to the second crowded party, and a melee eventually broke out.

"So when the storm up top basically was washed out, everyone rushed to the second party area," he added. "So it was probably overcrowded. People were drinking and things led to another."

During the melee, glasses and mugs were thrown around, and several people suffered minor injuries.

Ed said the emergency response was quite a scene.

"We saw the Coast Guard. We saw police officers," the passenger said. "And then you start to ask what happened. And the workers are saying, yeah it looks like nothing happened. They were just throwing around cups, mugs and there was just a big melee."

The ship left the New York-New Jersey area on June 20 for the Caribbean and returned to Pier 88 near West 48th Street as scheduled.

"Last night while Carnival Magic was returning to New York, a number of guests were involved in an altercation in a nightclub," the cruise line said in a statement. "Thankfully no serious injuries were reported and our onboard security team intervened. The ship arrived as scheduled this morning and authorities were notified and met the ship to interview suspects and witnesses and conduct an investigation."

The NYPD spoke with passengers as they disembarked, but no arrests have been reported at this time.
