A person was killed after a two-car crash sent a vehicle into a firework shop, setting the place on fire and blasting off the fireworks.

The incident happened in West Melbourne, Florida, at around 4:20 p.m. on Monday. When police arrived at the scene, the entire building was engulfed in flames, the Florida Highway Patrol shared.

The driver who was sent into the building, John Marcano, 53, was killed in the fire, according to officials.

Marcano was driving an SUV when he struck a Toyota, resulting in both cars flying through an intersection and into a Phantom Fireworks store parking lot, News 6 Orlando reported.

While the Toyota stopped in the parking lot, Marcano’s vehicle continued into the shop. Those working in the building at the time did make it out safe, officials shared, WFTV reported.

In a video posted by the Brevard County Fire Rescue, fireworks could be heard going off from within the store as the flames burned.

The department said that first responders “found heavy and rapidly deteriorating fire conditions with heavy involvement of the fireworks that were inside of the building.”

When the fire was eventually extinguished, Marcano was found dead inside.

“There will be an autopsy performed. Hopefully, the medical examiner will be able to shed light on that,” Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Channing Taylor said. “The family was unable to provide any information that would explain what happened.”

Taylor said the driver of the Toyota had been pulled off after hitting Marcano in order to exchange information, but he then struck her again and pushed her through the intersection into the parking lot.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.
