Instead, the Bears held their first full-contact practice Monday morning, and coach Matt Nagy is making plans for the quarterback competition between Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles to come right down to the wire.
Chicago opens the regular season at Detroit on Sept. 13, just less than four weeks from its work Monday.
"We are going to stretch that out as far as we can," Nagy said.
The Bears marked the earnest beginning of the quarterback competition last Wednesday, when Trubisky and Foles formally worked for the first time with the offense. That time on the practice field, part of the phased ramp-up period of practice, included just passing routes.
With the start of full-contact work Monday, the Bears lined up their first-team offense and defense on the back fields of Halas Hall. The reps with the first-team offense were split evenly between Trubisky and Foles.
Trubisky was the first quarterback to break the huddle, as Nagy promised back in April. The competition is officially underway.
"Now that we're able to start stacking practices, that's going to be a big part of the process," Nagy said. "We have a way to evaluate that we as offensive coaches feel really good about. We're just going to let them play it out, roll the ball out, have no agenda and let the best man win."
