Shaw, 28, hasn't played since Nov. 30 and had previously been on injured reserve. A designation on the long-term injured reserve means a player must miss at least 10 games and 24 days, so Shaw will be sidelined until after Christmas. He has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in 26 games.
In other moves, Chicago recalled defenseman Adam Boqvist and forward Matthew Highmore from AHL Rockford.
Boqvist, 19, had one goal in six games for the Blackhawks earlier this season, his first in the NHL. Highmore has skated in two games for the Blackhawks. He has 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 21 games for Rockford this season.
The Blackhawks next play at the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday evening.
