Current Bulls general manager Gar Forman has been relegated to mostly scouting work and day-to-day dealings with agents in recent seasons, as Paxson stepped up as the face of the franchise when it launched a rebuild in June 2017. The Bulls are now seeking a new individual to lead the the way and serve as their public face with the intention of Paxson staying put but receding into the background, the Sun-Times reported.
Paxson isn't expected to be stripped of any power, the Sun-Times reported. With that in mind, the question is how much influence he would regularly assert should the Bulls hire a new general manager. The answer to that figures to factor heavily into what type of candidates the Bulls can attract.
The Bulls also plan to expand their scouting department, the Sun-Times reported. Forman could be demoted and reassigned into that department.
Bulls coach Jim Boylen is under contract for two more seasons, but his job fate would likely lie in the hands of a new general manager. The Bulls are 36-77 under Boylen's watch, with his .319 winning percentage ranking as the second-worst among coaches in franchise history.
The Bulls are in the midst of a miserable season, sitting at 19-36 at the All-Star break after proclaiming at the outset of training camp that their goal was to reach the playoffs. They haven't reached the playoffs since 2017 and haven't won a postseason series since 2015.
