Edwards, 27, was sent to Triple-A Iowa on April 6 after his command and confidence hit rock bottom. Once a primary setup man on the Cubs' championship team in 2016, Edwards allowed six runs in 1 2/3 innings over four relief outings to begin the season before his demotion.
"It was very humbling being sent back," Edwards said upon his return to the Cubs on Monday. "I am back to where I am comfortable pitching now with a lot of confidence. I take it as I hit the bottom, so there is no place I could go is up. It is really great being back up here with the guys."
During his time in Iowa, Edwards went 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA in seven relief appearances, striking out seven and walking two in 8 1/3 innings.
"My thing was to mainly be aggressive," Edwards said. "I basically went down there to get my head to where it should be. That is how I feel now."
Experimenting with a new leg kick and landing was a goal for Edwards in spring training. Edwards was dropping his leg and arriving on the ground before the movement of his arm was in full motion.
That was ruled a balk move by MLB after review. That confusion only complicated issues for Edwards.
"He is ready to be back here," manager Joe Maddon said. "He was doing really well. I talked to him briefly. He seems to be in a really good place. You listen to the people (at Triple-A Iowa) and the conversations that occurred, they saw how he progressed.
"When he walked into the room, I felt a different prescience. A couple of years ago, I wanted him facing Bryce Harper in a playoff game. I wanted him badly. I still think he is that guy."
Citing a proper mental focus and work with the Cubs' mental skills department, Edwards explained that's feeling good.
"I just began being myself again," Edwards said. "My dad played a huge role. Like from day one, we went back to focusing on the mitt. I talked a lot about that, and prayer was huge. I went down there and told myself, 'Well, you're not in the big leagues. So I can always win a ring (at Triple-A).'
"That was my new goal if I didn't get back up here. After getting called up, I was very excited -- like being called up for the first time all over again. I could not sleep, I was very jittery. I accomplished some things down there and now I am looking forward to how it works here."
Maddon is hopeful he can get Edwards back into game action immediately.
