Chicago placed reliever Brandon Kintzler on the 10-day injured list with right pectoral inflammation and activated reliever Pedro Strop in a corresponding move. Kintzler exited the Cubs' 6-5 win against the Athletics on Monday evening complaining of discomfort in his pectoral. He then tested the ailment out by throwing in pregame before the Cubs chose to place him in the injured list.
Manager Joe Maddon indicated the team wanted to be cautious with Kintzler, who has been one of the Cubs' most reliable relievers with a 2.33 ERA in 49 appearances this season.
"The guy has been a rock for us," Maddon told reporters. "We want him to continue to be a rock for us."
Strop had been sidelined since July 27 due to left neck tightness. He never embarked on a rehab assignment, instead just getting some rest and working his way back into form with the Cubs. He has struggled with a 5.20 ERA in 32 appearances.
Kintzler trip to the injured list came one day after the Cubs placed closer Craig Kimbrel on it as well, as he's suffering from right knee soreness.
