In a corresponding move, Chicago recalled right-hander Rowan Wick from Triple-A Iowa. He was set to be available as the Cubs played at the Dodgers on Saturday night.
Hendricks was hit hard in the Cubs' 5-3 loss to the Dodgers on Friday, allowing five runs, all earned, in 4 1/3 innings. He began feeling discomfort a few days prior to that start, he told reporters.
Hendricks, 29, is 7-5 with a 3.36 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 14 starts this season. He's been durable in his career, logging at least 30 starts in three of the past four seasons and 24 in the other in that stretch.
Wick, 26, made one appearance for the Cubs earlier in the season, going one inning and allowing one earned run. He has a 2.30 ERA in 19 relief appearances at Iowa in 2019.
